Phylum: Chordata
Class: Sauropsida
Superorder: Dinosauria
Order: Ornithischia
Family: Hadrosauridae
Subfamily: Lambeosaurinae
Genus: Lambeosaurus
Lambeosaurus was one of the longest ornithopods (up to 15m) when it lived about 75 million years ago in the late Cretaceous. It can be distinguished from other genera within the family by the distinctive 'hatchet' crest located on the head. Scientists have largely settled on the idea that the crest is a vocalization device used to signal or attract members of the same species. Subtle variations in the shape and size of these crests may indicate that these features are sexually dimorphic, in addition to being age-related.
