Research Casting International has been entrusted by some of the world’s foremost Natural History museums to mold and mount their most valuable palaeontological specimens.
We are very proud of our metal working capabilities and have extensive experience hand forging external armatures for fossil skeletons. We also retain two internationally recognized master blacksmiths on staff. Once the pose for a skeleton is approved, the steel for the armatures is forged and the individual support armatures produced. Each support armature is formed to fit the individual bone; in some cases, the bone will slip onto the armature easily, and in other cases, a support may have to be attached with a set screw to facilitate removal of the original fossil. The bracket armature with the set screw also adds an extra element of security so that the bone is not completely removable in a public setting.
All of the projects that we have worked on in the past have involved cleaning and consolidating fossil material, sculpting missing bones and then mounting the skeletons with either an external armature in which all the bones are removable or a combination of external and internal armatures in which the bones are removable in varying degrees. We were also responsible for the packing, crating and shipping of the majority of specimens.
